Creating Harmony with Better Bedroom Design and Decoration
Most of the people have a chaotic life filled with work, errands, and chores that must be done. A good bedroom design plays a major role in giving your body the rest it needs.
You don’t have to be a professional decorator to have a basic understanding of the key elements of home décor. Knowing what these elements are before you decorate a bedroom helps to ensure that you achieve two of the most fundamental elements when it comes to successful interior design – balance and symmetry. Here is how with better bedroom design you can make your space more harmonious:
Balance and Symmetry
Balance and symmetry are the elements that achieve an overall harmony within the design choices made when decorating a bedroom – or any room.
When we use the term “balance”, it means that no one area or element of the room overpowers, or is “more important” than other areas or elements. This does not imply that having a focal point in your bedroom is “wrong.”
A focal point is an element in the room that the eye is drawn to first. In many cases when decorating a bedroom this will be the bed. It could also be a dynamic, colorful mural on a wall. Perhaps it is an ornate dresser or mirror. It could be the view out of the bedroom window. Understanding the element of balance when decorating a bedroom assists you when making choices outside of the focal point.
Symmetry impacts this overall sense of a balanced, unified visual impact when decorating a bedroom. There are three types of symmetry:
- Rotational Symmetry - A simple example of rotational symmetry is a flower. In a flower, the petals rotate around a central point. How you might use rotational symmetry when decorating a bedroom would be to place a grouping of mirrors on a wall with smaller mirrors encircling a larger mirror.
- Reflective Symmetry – If you place an object against a mirror, the image is reflected – in other words, a “mirror image.” When decorating your bedroom you would be using reflective symmetry by placing the same bedside tables at either side of the bed. Another example of reflective symmetry can be two, same size pieces of framed art hung on a wall. A further example is placing two of the same vases at either end of a dresser.
- Translational Symmetry - This type of symmetry repeats a specific element in a pattern where the element is repeated at equal distances, or distances that are different, but keep to a repeated pattern of the same sequence of distance. Think of patterns on wallpaper and tile patterns.
The Usual Suspects: Line, Texture and Color
Now that we’ve got a basic grasp of the importance of balance and symmetry when decorating a bedroom we are ready to talk about elements of décor that most of us are more familiar with: color, texture, and line. We now know the importance of considering how particular choices we make as to color, texture, and line must relate themselves to the balance and symmetry within the room.
Lines Aren’t Always Straight

When we think of a line it usually brings to mind straight lines, such as lines that form a square or a box. However, there are many kinds of lines and they certainly are not all straight. Lines on your designer quilt covers can be horizontal, vertical, parallel, diagonal, curved, wavy, zigzag, dashed, or dotted. It is important to recognize that the impact of line in a room should also take into consideration that lines are not all one dimensional. The edges of particular items in a bedroom create lines.
Texture: Can you feel it?
When you decorate a bedroom you will create surfaces. A table top has a surface. A wall has a surface. Even curtains and quilt covers have a surface. There are many types of surfaces. Surfaces are most always categorized as either smooth or rough, however, there are many gradients of what can be called smooth and what can be called rough. When you decorate a bedroom you have the opportunity to use texture as an element that creates a particular character or “feel” to the room.
Color My World
Color is perhaps the element most of us think we can deal with no matter how much, or how little, decorating experience we have. At the same time, once you’re staring at paint chips, choosing what color (or color scheme) you want to use when decorating a bedroom can be a daunting experience.
Hopefully you have found the inspiration you need to come up with the right combination of ideas for you to transform your room into the oasis you need and desire. Remember, you can achieve a creative bedroom design that is fun and exciting as well as restful, all you need to do is start!

Create Zen in Your Home by Adding Blue to the Bedroom
How do you feel when you’re gazing upon the ocean? Or lying in the green grass looking up at the cloudless afternoon sky? I’m going to guess that you feel much like the majority of humankind feels when seeing blue — peaceful, calm and relaxed. Throughout history, people have turned to color in order to provoke different feelings and treatments of ailments. Blue was thought to treat pain and soothe illnesses. On the contrary, blue can also be cold and somewhat depressing, if too dark or stark.
It’s a delicate balance of color and texture, finding ways to soothe your soul as you drift to sleep each night only to awaken feeling refreshed and ready for a new day. From blue bedroom to bath, the calmness of a deep-dark color palette can certainly ease your mind, but what other tones and hues should you mix in and how?
Walls
If you’re in a hot climate, adding cool blues is a good option. Pair them with other cool colors like gray, silver and cream. According to Houzz.com, your sanctuary could trick your brain to think it’s cooler outside. Think about painting one accent wall a deep, rich blue offset with the other colors like brown or orange. A light, china blue could cover the entire room as it creates an airy atmosphere. And while we don’t love white walls necessarily, we do love setting white against a blue background.
Consider a white headboard against a blue-violet wall with white roses and accessories.

Bedding
From dusty blueberry to striped navy and white, blue is a popular bedding hue that coordinates with any room theme. If you’re going to lean toward the soothing and peaceful side of design, choose colors that coordinate with other feelings you’d like to evoke and that are pleasing to the eye. Adding steel blue, silver and pearl can give you the sense of ocean and a free spirit. With white pillows against a serene blue wall or headboard, feel elegance in the wind. Consider purple flowers for a pop of interest in your blue bedroom.
Flooring
With stone, tile or carpet, slate blue looks great on the floors. If you want to add an explosion of color with bright blue flooring, be very careful in the bedroom not to over do it. Maybe a blue shag throw under a baby blue or white chair could be charming. If using blue as your main color palette, there’s no reason to confuse things with a blue floor. Leave that for design centers, kitchens and retail stores. Wood flooring is warm and natural and works well with any shade of blue.
Curtains
If you need to minimize light, choose a heavy curtain with blue accents that coordinate with your bedroom color palette. With the attempt to keep peace in the room, consider a natural blind or shade, such as bamboo. If the daylight is welcomed, a sheer blue window treatment can add a softness to your space.
Accessories
Sometimes, you just need to add one item in the room to highlight the color you intend to focus on. Toss a white shag rug under a bright blue chair. Paint one small distant wall in the room the blue of your choice. Green paired with blue can give a feeling of harmony. Tie in some green into your blue sanctuary and let the earth and sky come together in your bedroom assuring you a peaceful space.
Let us know how you did your blue bedroom in the comments fellas.

Unique Design Elements to Add to Your Home
Is your flat starting to feel as drab and dreary as the summer weather? When even a thorough dusting does not make the place more cheery, it might be time to bring some new design elements into your interior areas to lift your mood. Nothing can be done about the climate, but you have many alternatives for sparking up your flat and your spirits with unique design elements, of course!
One-of-a-Kind Furnishings
If you love the new quirky furnishings, consider Grace Bonneys chopped tables. Bonney has found a way to use cut dowels, colour, and a metal ring to create occasional tables to spice up your living room or garden terrace. This do-it-yourself project is fun and easy. Updating the furnishings in the front of the house can be achieved with simple, classic looks, like with VisionDecor.com entryway furniture. If you have piles of clutter to overcome, you could build a wall of cupboards to house your memorabilia and necessitiesout of sight and out of mind. Wacky shaped side chairs and cubes covered in whimsical prints are other options for brightening an otherwise dreary room.
Colour Ranges
Redecorating doesn’t have to include a full overhaul of your flat, from the flooring and paint to the furniture and window blinds. It is easy with the new colour ranges and wacky wallpapers to incorporate bright, lively decorating schemes. Annabell Smith, Style Director for Livingetc Paints, says you can add interest and depth with the new paint ranges. One suggestion is to try two-tone decorating. By masking off two or three horizontal stripes (of differing sizes) just below the wall center, you can draw on complimentary colours to add romance and elegance to your bedroom. Using a light pink against a soft, subtle gray/green is perfect for a flattering, romantic transformation.
Lighting Accessories
If you are not bowled over about changing your colours throughout your flat, consider adding wallpapers to one accent wall. You might also consider elements for lighting that rely on shape and contrast to add interest. Unusually shaped pendant lights, flamboyant candelabras or chandeliers and side table lamps can all be incorporated to add interest and intrigue to your schemes.
Personal Bits and Bobs
Displaying personal bits and pieces around your flat reveals your own style and personality. A unique touch to incorporate into your space is custom coasters made from your favorite photographs. You might include vacation photos, snapshots of family or anything that hints to your personality. Instagram is offering a new service that converts photos to beautiful coasters to protect your table finishes. The creators that developed the process were inspired to create something that would be highly personal that would contrast the stark natural differences between online images and concrete-touchable art pieces.
Unique Design Elements
Exterior Additions
Experts often suggest you bring the outside in; however, American metal artist Brandon Williams has come up with modern, exterior fires for your garden patio. The sleek modern design and vibrant colours are certain to chase away the dampness. Striking, verticals lines mixed with simple curves make for a dramatic eye-catching center piece to gather round. You can strip your flat and start over from the floor up, but sometimes making one or two changes is enough to revitalize and organize your space with a fresh scheme. Finish off the room with designer Blinds.com window blinds to block the sun and add privacy or drape fabrics over window rods to present a lighter, more airy atmosphere.

Top 3 Feng Shui Tips for Your Living Room
The living room is the space where people, whether your own family members or guests, come together and interact with each other. So, living rooms should enhance peace, serenity and harmony. Here are some Feng Shui tips that can be applied to your living room regardless of whether it is small or large in size. You should feel really safe, comfortable and positive while spending your time in your living area, which might thus help to enhance the overall quality of your life.
Feng Shui Compass
Construction:
You can try to incorporate Feng Shui from the construction phase of the living room. It is always good to have a living room with a regular shape. It should have enough space for the energy to flow around and should not feel (regardless of actual size) as being too big or too small.
You can do this by using the appropriate kind of flooring or paint colors that make the room feel just big enough in size. The living room should not be higher than the dining room. It is not good to have more than 2 doors in the living room. If feasible, you can close some of them or use curtains to hide their presence. Moreover, ideal ratio of doors to window is 1:3.
Furnishings of living room:
You need to paint your living room with light and lively colors such as pinks, blues, whites etc. There should be enough natural lighting to uplift chi as per Feng Shui. Dark corners can be lighted with artificial lights so as to bring more chi to the entire living room. Furniture should be placed in such a way that it promotes conversation. Also, all furniture should face the door so that all people sitting would have a clear view of the door. But, sofas should not be too close to any door or window. It is not good to go for L shaped or floating furniture arrangements. Moreover, try to place guests in the commanding position as much as possible.
Objects for living room:
You can hang family photos on the east wall in the living room to augment significance of family. Mirrors should not be placed in a living room in such a way that it reflects the main door because it will deflect all energy. Mirrors should be placed in such a way that it reflects views that you wish to see again and again.
Do not hang pictures of aggressive animals in your living room. Use lights, plants with round leaves or mirrors to make dull corners more positive. You can have a fish tank in the north of your living room as it is a very good item to bring in good chi as per Feng Shui. As a basic rule, keep your living room clean and tidy. For many apartments where space is a major constraint, family room and living room are combined together. In such cases, try to place your television or sound system in such a way that it does not disturb guests or family members who wish to have a peaceful conversation.
Hope these top 3 Feng Shui tips will help in doing some good to your living room.

Kenya Hara: Accomplished Designer
When Kenya Hara, a Japanese designer, designed a logo out of Human hair at the Haptic Exhibition, he opened new gateways to creativity. “I designed it using human hair, which shocked some and impressed others. I believe that the human body has a great possibility to fill the walls of one’s home. I want people to use their entire body to create a fantastic world of art,” explains the visionary.
Sustaining excellence right from Nagano Winter Olympics, 1998 to “Designing Design” an influential book, Kenya Hara is a design institution in itself.
Hara theory is object designing and art out of the most unknown ideas. In a recent interview, Hara recalled the masterpiece in his career; ‘Re-Design: The Daily Products of the 20th Century’ in 2000. “That exhibition happened when a new century was beginning. As the art director of that exhibition, I asked many talented artists to redesign ordinary things like matchsticks, toilet paper and even diapers. Those objects actually became art pieces in my eyes, it was then that I posed the question to myself and society — what is design?” recalls Hara.
The essence to create design out of the uncommon and wild objects signifies his work. “Everything is design — a pen, a cup, the coaster the cup is placed on, each tile on the floor, the city. I want to awaken people to the reality of design and make them aware of the difference between re-inventing a design and creating a new one. That’s what interests me most — to understand the challenges in changing something from the old to new,” shares Hara.
Japan, his home-country, has lot of influence on him and the design projects. His latest being methodological floor design for Japanese houses, where footwear are not allowed inside the house, design something that comforts both the feet and the house. “Like in some other countries, the Japanese also take off our shoes when we enter a house. If the floor is more intelligent and can capture information about the human body like blood pressure, temperature and weight, we can imagine a new dialogue between a house and the inhabitant. A house can be a high-tech art form that combines various technologies,” he explains.
He recreates from old to new and culture oriented artifacts by not restricting his designs to current trends only. “Don’t think of the future as the next five years but think of it as a 40 to 50-year time frame. Similarly, when you go into the past, go back at least 100 years and from that viewpoint, look at what you can do today,” advises Kenya Hara.

Kids Room Decor with Avant-Grade Ideas
‘The trivial talk of “good taste”, “bad taste”, “taste makers” … mistakenly believed to be authoritative judgment on houses and interiors are… clichés babbled by society hoppers and commercial entrepreneurs to soothe consumer pressure,’ says interior devotee Robsjohn-Gibblings. What is true taste then? I’d say it was historical knowledge and exposure to varied spaces, strong individual conviction and a secure inherent instinct for creating vibrant environment. Do we require the same sense of taste even for designing kid’s room? Off course! The instinct to understand the importance of “likes” and “dislikes” of the children is very crucial to depict something that they would love.
Keeping the fact in mind that kids grow fast and their taste may vary with time, decorating their room is quite a challenge. A cheerful Peony Pink girl’s room with castles on the wall, soft toys and even star-shaped night lamps equivalently for boy’s blue colored wall, Ben-Tens, basketball net and a car shaped bed. All these fascinating design may be a joyful delight for your little girl or a boy but what then when their taste starts to change and they may find all these fanciful room designs a “kiddie” play? The room decoration must be flexible and workable. Children and teens need their own space in the house as it makes them feel ‘grown up’ and important. They must experience the interiors when they enter their room, no matter how many times it had been redesigned or reconstructed.

Room themes are the most easy and efficient way to design children’s room. The excitement in the room comes from the variety of materials and textures used; different material used on the floors, walls and surfaces. The old linoleum floors are history, replaced with dark brown laminated wood and a square border of tumbled travertine tiles in earthy colors. The wall paint to be used in the room must me relaxed keeping the taste of kids in mind. Pinks, Lilacs, purple, red, yellow and green, are the best to compliment a girl’s room. Though there are always exceptions for using contrasts or textures on the wall depending on the pliability of the room. Blues, navy, dark green and other dark colors go well with boy’s room. Use artwork or sculpture in children’s space, but having something that intrigues them or has them curious about life, nature or the way something works is always a bonus. Different types of shags or tapestries can be used in the room, and also a notice board or soft-board for creativity can be added. The most crucial is to use paints which can be cleaned easily as Picasso’s and Leonardo’s are always up to something.
Proper room lighting plays an integral role in creating the right ambience for a house. Small and slightly larger concealed lights as well as table lamps offer soft look to the room. Kids’ room can have innovative lighting fixtures with different shapes and effects which really make the room hip. Lamps such as rotating blubs and musical ones are also very much adored by the kids.
All these designs and decors can be regulated in the rooms, and keeping the safety of your child in mind nothing should be compromised.
Good ideas, efficient space utilization and an elegant look, all make for a beautiful, comfortable and practical space. ‘A home should reflect the owner’s taste and personality as well as being warm and comfortable,’ says well-known interior designer Nisha Jamwal.

Remodeling & Designing your House Flooring
When you plan on renovating or redesigning the entire house, do not forget residence floors, which are an important part of the interior design aspect. One can either do their flooring at the time of buying a new house; get floors modernized during your house remodeling project or whenever you feel that your house needs to be revamped. In any case, changing the already laid out flooring is quite a big task and can significantly transform the appearance and value of the house.
Before starting on your floor improvements project, you have to keep a number of points in mind. You should know about the types of flooring available in the market, the cost involved, are they easy to manage along with picking the best based on pattern and color of the floorings.
There are all sorts of flooring available in the market. The costs involved in remodeling the floor types vary considerably.
- Ceramic tile floorings are basically solid stone-type tiles that are found in many designs and patterns, for example; in square and rectangular shapes.
- Stone floorings are actual stones like marble and granite. They are strong and quite commonly used in the house overhaul.
- Wooden floorings are made from sturdy wooden logs and normally used in regions where the temperature is very low. This is because wood pieces tend to keep house warm and cozy. However, wooden floorings are difficult to maintain and quite costly.
- Laminated floorings are just like wooden floorings. However, they are prefinished, less costly and just glued on to the subfloor.
- Carpet flooring gives a malleable and comfortable feeling while being offered in various colors and different price range. The feel is just like that of a fabric on the floor.
- Vinyl flooring is comparatively cheaper than the other available options. It is essentially sheet-based and available in almost all sorts of shades and patterns.
You should be able to zero in on a particular type of flooring after knowing its pros and cons, as choosing the right design and color is quite essential for your home. Tight patterns in light colors are perfect for smaller rooms while on large rooms you have the luxury of choice. However if possible go with safe colors and patterns, keeping the wall paints in minds. This is because you normally don’t change the flooring as frequently you change the colours of the walls.
However, before getting on to remodeling your floors, you can flip a few home design magazines, search on the internet, for more information and discuss potential patterns with your interior designer to know what flooring will suit your house and go with other accessories.

‘Diptyque’- Inamoratas Of The Victorian Style Design
In the world of Uber fancy decor and ever changing demands, the word ‘traditional’ sounds very old. The retail design industry is comprised of many different brands and companies, and every year thousands of designers emerge into the retail interior decor scene. With the striving economy and flourishing online shopping the retail interior designing is strenuously making its way through and up!

Sophisticated designer Christoper Jenner a UK based interior decorator and the owner of the French Fragrance brand ‘Diptyque Paris’ based in Leadenhall market in London, resurrected a new era of interior designing. Like the Oscar Winning film ‘The King’s Speech’ which was based on the Victorian epoch, his store seems to be a part of the movie. It stands out on the sidewalks with dark wooden finish with dentils and columns. The design of the store was to unify the French and English influences together in a highly designed space. The expression of the physical and structural DNA of the brand constructed an element of heritage, quiescent and quality. The most enterprising work of the store is the use of hand-painted glasses, dark walnut wood and brass knobs which is keeping it very traditional. Some of the areas of the store are heavily lit with chandeliers and traditional lightning tubes and some areas gives us the glimpses of the time gone by. With warm hues used like red, gold and purple there are every aspect of the Victorian style in the store. An object of the wall features lovingly restyled retro furniture and an artistic distressed hand painted mirror below with acid washed Diptyque copper logo set into the classic Liberty ‘fan’ fabric design reprinted as a wallpaper, all stand as an artistic tribute to the brand.
The most striking feature of the store is the ‘Choriambe’ fabric design; thousands of laser cut peep holes provide viewing screen towards the mirrored back walls.

The framework of the store was to merge in the French and English traditional styles together and that was the central theme of the design. The result of the two iconic design styles has provided textures and elegant look all over the done-up spaces. The timeless architecture and the quality of the design makes Diptyque protrude from the rest.
The passion for design, the knowledge of architecture and constant drive to establish something creative is demonstrated looking at this store, positioning Diptyque Paris ‘a luxury brand with innovative vision’.

Deceptive Designs: A Non Traditional Luxury
“It’s something that architects and designers have wanted to do for years, but it’s always been ultra luxury, one off-custom stuff”, said Rob Roland in regards to non-traditional luxury designs, the executive vice president of Dana Innovations in San Clemente, California.
Talking about fundamentals here, design is what is visual, something that can be seen or touched, but when it comes to unconventional non-sighted designs it is a blank vision. When a designer comes up with ideas that challenges this fundamental, dynamic innovations are born. Patrick Mclnerney’s, an architect from San Deigo who took this concept seriously, by modifying his living room and ceiling as an extension to each other, with little difference in the structure. It is thrilling when there is provision of lights in the room but no switches, an illusion of fixtures on the wall but no hooks, there is jive in air because of the music but not really any player in the room. Mclnerney used “zero sighted” design techniques to nullify the effect of any clutter by fixtures both in and out. The stereo may be plugged in your closet, background power outlets, hidden wires seamed through niche, laser or automated switch, handle less drawers-cupboards-doors, camouflaged usage of wood, custom designed TV cabinets, etc. are some of the latest ideas entering the market.

The concept is to collapse the mix of too much in the room to little “visible” in the room. This attempt is not an early bird entry; and been prominent principle as early as 1990s. William L. Murphy’s Murphy Bed was a conceiving design; the changes made later in the decade may not be called improvements. Bouchara, for instance enclosed a degree of transparency through clear glass console table, easily confusing to infant minds, specially designed for kids. For Miller, a New York based architect it was fighting with fire, on his challenge to design a salon based on the “non-sighted” design. “The approach involved covering every surface with wood shelving (even the ceiling), creating what he called a “complex kind of waffle space”, Miller quoted.
But this may not be a universal adaption for the market as the major portion of clients are the ones who like their gadgets on display and valuable interior design accessories. The designer creates special corners and spaces to bring out the purpose these devices eject. This superficial display of décor and surfaces will never disappear. The TV although have trimmed down from its old box version to sleek screens but the liking of larger screens is constant which occupy the surface space. This doesn’t satisfy the urge to nullify clutter through transparent and minimal inner design. The remote controlled ceiling fan, lights and chandelier, bathroom showers and electrical fixtures might fit into the comfort zone but you cannot imagine a door without a knob! Its formation was never meant to be that complex.
The scope of “button less” machinery needs to break itself from the ultra luxury produce to the less robotic and accessible layouts.

Illuminations for Restaurant
I have an uneasy knack with my platter to look neat and colorful, especially when am treated as a guest foodie, which happens, certainly when dining out! Probably with most of us, a dark-sad red-green looking meal on table is not tempting, on the contrary if the restaurant designer could have used better lighting to make my veggies look more bright! That would have done the trick (for the Chef at least). It’s not the diner’s eye that understands the power rested in perfect light set up, but also strongly recommended for the restaurant designer.

The ambience, feel and ethical appeal of a good restaurant décor lies in how well you make the interior look. Lighting of any restaurant is its golden veil, the feather in your hat, the icing on the cake! The designer has to create that feel, no point of designing a restaurant, with a poor set up and nil knowledge of lighting, as whatsoever you may serve, be it your food, décor, fixtures, ceiling etc.. It will convey a remorse look. Now don’t assume it as a Hercules task, its all about your perseverance towards lighting.
The foremost adaption by a designer should be the budget set up which is possible in today’s competitive market. The 24 hour energy saving mode should be your target when it comes to budget formation as the restaurant lights usage is beyond day-night schedule, energy saving devices often zips the budget down. A good lot of LED, ceiling lights, cove lights, chic lamps, lanterns, chandelier bulbs, etc is available for the energy saving purpose. To add here, restaurant designers must have the knowledge about the types of light required. About which color to be used in the ceiling light to enhance the height and to compliment the chandelier (if any), cove lights usage, single table lighting coverage, reception lighting and lobby lights. The designer, if playing with colors in illuminating the area, must not over indulge in dark or mellow shades, but in wide and spreading shades. A bar or VIP area can be experimented with shade of lights, but it’s a strict no for entrance, you ought to welcome your diners with airy light, sophisticated lamps or chandler and fixtures with warm lighting effect. If your walls are displayed with certain decorating ideas, paintings, traditional (read cultured) writings and separate panels are designed for each of them; keep the lights for such displays very centered, not the type that hits your eye.
Whenever you’re installing or modifying your restaurant light set up, the planning for the same is expected from the designer, as when you plan, the quantity of lights and the quality to be achieved is easy to measure. Ignoring the layout of your lights and forgetting to define your code of perfection may just end up an urban Italian restaurant to look like a street corner dine-in. Keep your fancy lamps, shades and stands for the dining tables, use your neon lights strictly and only for bars or dance areas, fluorescent lights are good for kitchen area and energy efficient too, the LED bulbs for your ceilings, reception and lobby which illusions space and are energy saving device. Always remember ‘sufficient lighting’ is no concept in case restaurant, it is ‘pleasing lights.
It’s not about the correct one but about the crafted lighting in a restaurant. That is how a designer should visualize everything.
