Design a Cozy Reading Nook

Apr 25, 2013     No Comments    Posted under: Design Tutorials, Interior Design

Your bedroom is for the rest, and the living room is for lounging. So where do you retreat when you want to be romanticized by Rumi’s passionate poetry or wander to exotic lands by reading sci-fi adventure novels? Design a creative and an intimate reading nook with the following ideas:

Vintage Velvet Loveseat for Reading Nook

Use a piece of furniture designated solely for reading nook where you can loose yourself in a book of your choice. A plush vintage velvet loveseat accented with buttons, and wooden legs create a unique, retro reading space. Kick up your legs for a relaxing Sunday afternoon of bonding with Jack Kerouac on the open road. If you’re really engrossed in a fictional novel page-by-page, you may find yourself hanging over the loveseat’s arm— one hand clutching a book, one hand balancing a glass of Pinot Grigio. Create a charming space with an old-fashioned loveseat in champagne, gold, royal blue or mint green.

Quilt & Pillows for Reading Nook

Especially during dark and frigid winter nights, entangle yourself in a colorful, lush quilt. For the bookworm whose adventures exist between books covers, a beautiful and luxurious quilt is a worthwhile investment. The vibrant and wayward Pilar Quilt or the romantic floral Jolie Quilt will provide the most comforting reading nook for your imaginative journeys. Toss matching pillows in the loveseat’s corners and even scatter pillows on a floor rug in case you move to the ground.

Alfresco Decor for Reading Nook

Accenting your nook with greenery and floral, whether artificial or alive, invites endless possibilities of nature into your home. Set a tall plant beside your loveseat so its large green leaves tower over you as if you’re nestled high in the treetops of the rain forest. On a small end table, set a vase with wild flowers next to the designated spot where your book resides. If your reading nook has a window, line miniature potted plants along the windowsill. As the sunshine streams through your organically accessorized window pane past a cascading drapery, you’ll be swept away into a far-off place of natural seclusion and wonderment. Natural sunlight and plant life also help calm the mind, whether you’re reading fantastical tales and tragic love stories or textbooks on visual and concept development.

Accent Wall

If your nook is comprised of two cornering walls, make an aesthetic statement by painting an accent wall a solid color, colorful stripes or an erratic pattern. Using warm colors such as yellow, orange and coral, paint vertical streaks on the wall to emulate sunshine pouring down. Be bold and create a strong energy by painting your accent wall crimson red or go romantic and delicate by painting the wall sea foam green or soft violet.

An alternative to transforming a wall with paint is to make over the space with inspirational wall hangings and decor. Frame quotes from great American writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Margaret Fuller and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Surrounding yourself with timeless poetic words such as “what lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you” (Emerson) and “the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, made to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time…” (Kerouac). Also, loosely, and chaotically, decorating wall space with vintage world maps or pages of poetry creates an intimate space for dreams and fantasies.

Create Zen in Your Home by Adding Blue to the Bedroom

Apr 14, 2013     No Comments    Posted under: Design Tutorials, Interior Design

How do you feel when you’re gazing upon the ocean? Or lying in the green grass looking up at the cloudless afternoon sky? I’m going to guess that you feel much like the majority of humankind feels when seeing blue — peaceful, calm and relaxed. Throughout history, people have turned to color in order to provoke different feelings and treatments of ailments. Blue was thought to treat pain and soothe illnesses. On the contrary, blue can also be cold and somewhat depressing, if too dark or stark.

It’s a delicate balance of color and texture, finding ways to soothe your soul as you drift to sleep each night only to awaken feeling refreshed and ready for a new day. From blue bedroom to bath, the calmness of a deep-dark color palette can certainly ease your mind, but what other tones and hues should you mix in and how?

Walls

If you’re in a hot climate, adding cool blues is a good option. Pair them with other cool colors like gray, silver and cream. According to Houzz.com, your sanctuary could trick your brain to think it’s cooler outside. Think about painting one accent wall a deep, rich blue offset with the other colors like brown or orange. A light, china blue could cover the entire room as it creates an airy atmosphere. And while we don’t love white walls necessarily, we do love setting white against a blue background.

Consider a white headboard against a blue-violet wall with white roses and accessories.

Blue Bedroom

Bedding

From dusty blueberry to striped navy and white, blue is a popular bedding hue that coordinates with any room theme. If you’re going to lean toward the soothing and peaceful side of design, choose colors that coordinate with other feelings you’d like to evoke and that are pleasing to the eye. Adding steel blue, silver and pearl can give you the sense of ocean and a free spirit. With white pillows against a serene blue wall or headboard, feel elegance in the wind. Consider purple flowers for a pop of interest in your blue bedroom.

Flooring

With stone, tile or carpet, slate blue looks great on the floors. If you want to add an explosion of color with bright blue flooring, be very careful in the bedroom not to over do it. Maybe a blue shag throw under a baby blue or white chair could be charming. If using blue as your main color palette, there’s no reason to confuse things with a blue floor. Leave that for design centers, kitchens and retail stores. Wood flooring is warm and natural and works well with any shade of blue.

Curtains

If you need to minimize light, choose a heavy curtain with blue accents that coordinate with your bedroom color palette. With the attempt to keep peace in the room, consider a natural blind or shade, such as bamboo. If the daylight is welcomed, a sheer blue window treatment can add a softness to your space.

Accessories

Sometimes, you just need to add one item in the room to highlight the color you intend to focus on. Toss a white shag rug under a bright blue chair. Paint one small distant wall in the room the blue of your choice. Green paired with blue can give a feeling of harmony. Tie in some green into your blue sanctuary and let the earth and sky come together in your bedroom assuring you a peaceful space.

Let us know how you did your blue bedroom in the comments fellas.

Stress Reducing Design in Healthcare Spaces

Oct 4, 2012     No Comments    Posted under: Design Firms, Design Tutorials, Interior Design

How can the feel good factor be fused in places dealing with the healing experience? Well this may be the reason why healthcare units are changing their outlook towards infrastructure, to help patients and visitors feel less stressed, and much more comfortable during their time at hospitals and clinics.

When I recently visited a so called “5 star” hospital in a metro city, the entrance had a large glass partition with water flowing in between, on my right was coffee house and left-hand-side had a modern reception area with bright wall texture. I was flabbergasted to be honest, with a question doing rounds in my mind; have I come to see an ailing friend in a hospital or visiting a Spa?  I was impressed with the changes in the interior design of the hospital to make it more welcoming.

St Joseph Healthcare Hamilton

It’s apparent that such places are crowded, full of tension and working constantly surrounded with a boring never-ever changing décor. But now there are more than blank white walls, stained pillars and rusted waiting areas.  While medical facilities are being upgraded with better service standards to run in competitive market, it’s important to look good too!

There is more style in the corridors with placing of Indoor plants & wall paintings. Facilities like relaxing chairs, LCD TVs, provision of beverage counters, locker units, etc are fulfilling luxury demands and meeting designer principles. The waiting area is now known as “waiting lounge”, dividing the space for children and adults. I have seen healthcare places taking the pain and recreating small corners into kids play area, relieving saddle off the parents, while they are at such places. There are soothing LED lights installed, particular area devoted to landscaping with water features, more glass windows to minimize suffocation and pattern flooring to add detailing in the design. There is more zest of exciting colors on walls, curtains and bed sheets, texture on the ceiling and modern selection of furniture. The patient room is equipped with television, sofas, cupboards, sterilized washrooms, magazines and itinerary. Everything is placed in such a manner that’ll bestow “homely” feel.

Whole agenda of polishing the interior is to divert patient’s mind from the sickness to pleasant notions.  Placing of fixtures like large vases in corners, indoor fountains and wall panels for miniatures makes a lot of difference.  Such wide-ranging design makes Healthcare places less alarming and more soothing. The décor should be able to accommodate needs of everyone.  It’s the magic of colors, right furniture placing and balance of lighting fixtures that have done wonders to these places. This may also be called stress reducing interior design.

Wolf & Gordon’s Design Safari…

Sep 29, 2012     No Comments    Posted under: Design Firms, Design Tutorials, Interior Design

zebra printsKeeping in mind the quality, performance and environmental standards, Wolf-Gordon has come up with a new concept of a lush African Safari and Zebra prints in the new ‘Chic’ catalog for the London stores, available in different shades. The lush prints are designed in such a way that it is in sync with the London metropolis. It’s a beautiful blend of bright sunny colors as well as dark gloomy hues. This very well depicts the clime of London as it is also the hub of many different cultures and religions: Asians, South Asians, Africans, South Americans and so on.

The new design from Wolf-Gordon is just the expression of the multicultural London. The bold use of hues and the zebra print is an amalgamation of the different cultures. The online publications like Go design Go and Hospitality Design has already shown interest in this comely use of these two designs.

Zebra theme is in bold, seven different colors: the Dauntless Orange and red, the vintage black and white, promising camel and white and four more lower neutral colors. It would look gorgeous in the cafes or lounges, also in restro and bars with the dramatic element of wilderness.

Safari takes the inkling from African textiles, which are small-scale but rich in details and design textile. The use of matte ink and ensconce pearlescent creates a sense of intensity while the crepe carved enlarges the perceptible texture of the surface. The Safari theme comes with different colors ranging from neutral to bright. The fling of these two exquisite range of wall covers has brought a new sense of design styles among the retailers. With this, a new era of bold textures will soon become pride of the market!

Kids Room Decor with Avant-Grade Ideas

Sep 25, 2012     No Comments    Posted under: Design Tutorials, Interior Design

‘The trivial talk of “good taste”, “bad taste”, “taste makers” … mistakenly believed to be authoritative judgment on houses and interiors are… clichés babbled by society hoppers and commercial entrepreneurs to soothe consumer pressure,’ says interior devotee Robsjohn-Gibblings. What is true taste then? I’d say it was historical knowledge and exposure to varied spaces, strong individual conviction and a secure inherent instinct for creating vibrant environment. Do we require the same sense of taste even for designing kid’s room? Off course! The instinct to understand the importance of “likes” and “dislikes” of the children is very crucial to depict something that they would love.

Keeping the fact in mind that kids grow fast and their taste may vary with time, decorating their room is quite a challenge. A cheerful Peony Pink girl’s room with castles on the wall, soft toys and even star-shaped night lamps equivalently for boy’s blue colored wall, Ben-Tens, basketball net and a car shaped bed. All these fascinating design may be a joyful delight for your little girl or a boy but what then when their taste starts to change and they may find all these fanciful room designs a “kiddie” play? The room decoration must be flexible and workable.  Children and teens need their own space in the house as it makes them feel ‘grown up’ and important. They must experience the interiors when they enter their room, no matter how many times it had been redesigned or reconstructed.

Kids Room Design

Room themes are the most easy and efficient way to design children’s room. The excitement in the room comes from the variety of materials and textures used; different material used on the floors, walls and surfaces. The old linoleum floors are history, replaced with dark brown laminated wood and a square border of tumbled travertine tiles in earthy colors. The wall paint to be used in the room must me relaxed keeping the taste of kids in mind. Pinks, Lilacs, purple, red, yellow and green, are the best to compliment a girl’s room. Though there are always exceptions for using contrasts or textures on the wall depending on the pliability of the room. Blues, navy, dark green and other dark colors go well with boy’s room. Use artwork or sculpture in children’s space, but having something that intrigues them or has them curious about life, nature or the way something works is always a bonus. Different types of shags or tapestries can be used in the room, and also a notice board or soft-board for creativity can be added. The most crucial is to use paints which can be cleaned easily as Picasso’s and Leonardo’s are always up to something.

Proper room lighting plays an integral role in creating the right ambience for a house. Small and slightly larger concealed lights as well as table lamps offer soft look to the room. Kids’ room can have innovative lighting fixtures with different shapes and effects which really make the room hip. Lamps such as rotating blubs and musical ones are also very much adored by the kids.

All these designs and decors can be regulated in the rooms, and keeping the safety of your child in mind nothing should be compromised.

Good ideas, efficient space utilization and an elegant look, all make for a beautiful, comfortable and practical space. ‘A home should reflect the owner’s taste and personality as well as being warm and comfortable,’ says well-known interior designer Nisha Jamwal.

‘Diptyque’- Inamoratas Of The Victorian Style Design

Sep 21, 2012     No Comments    Posted under: Design Firms, Design Tutorials, Interior Design

In the world of Uber fancy decor and ever changing demands, the word ‘traditional’ sounds very old. The retail design industry is comprised of many different brands and companies, and every year thousands of designers emerge into the retail interior decor scene. With the striving economy and flourishing online shopping the retail interior designing is strenuously making its way through and up!

diptyque paris 776x1024

Sophisticated designer Christoper Jenner a UK based interior decorator and the owner of the French Fragrance brand ‘Diptyque Paris’ based in Leadenhall market in London, resurrected a new era of interior designing. Like the Oscar Winning film ‘The King’s Speech’ which was based on the Victorian epoch, his store seems to be a part of the movie. It stands out on the sidewalks with dark wooden finish with dentils and columns. The design of the store was to unify the French and English influences together in a highly designed space. The expression of the physical and structural DNA of the brand constructed an element of heritage, quiescent and quality. The most enterprising work of the store is the use of hand-painted glasses, dark walnut wood and brass knobs which is keeping it very traditional. Some of the areas of the store are heavily lit with chandeliers and traditional lightning tubes and some areas gives us the glimpses of the time gone by. With warm hues used like red, gold and purple there are every aspect of the Victorian style in the store. An object of the wall features lovingly restyled retro furniture and an artistic distressed hand painted mirror below with acid washed Diptyque copper logo set into the classic Liberty ‘fan’ fabric design reprinted as a wallpaper, all stand as an artistic tribute to the brand.

The most striking feature of the store is the ‘Choriambe’ fabric design; thousands of laser cut peep holes provide viewing screen towards the mirrored back walls.

diptyque paris london store

The framework of the store was to merge in the French and English traditional styles together and that was the central theme of the design. The result of the two iconic design styles has provided textures and elegant look all over the done-up spaces. The timeless architecture and the quality of the design makes Diptyque protrude from the rest.

The passion for design, the knowledge of architecture and constant drive to establish something creative is demonstrated looking at this store, positioning Diptyque Paris ‘a luxury brand with innovative vision’.
